 PHILOSOPHY of G.W. CARVER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Basic to any curriculum and general school operation are the philosophical and educational benefits supported by those who design and implement curriculum and practices. The following beliefs are valued by the personnel of Carver Elementary School:

* Each person is a unique individual as a result of his or her experiences. This statement implies that the learning process, and that which is learned, will vary with each individual.

* Learning develops through involvement, which is the interaction of the learner with all facets of the environment. The learner is continuously making choices, the consequences of which shape his or her being.

* The critical factors of any learning experience include content, the process of learning, and the interaction of the learner and teacher. All of these factors are of equal importance and all must be continually evaluated in terms of stated, measurable objectives.

This philosophy of education is reflected by the curriculum, which emphasizes the school system’s responsibility for each student's intellectual, emotional, and behavioral development in order to achieve his or her own personal and vocational objectives.

* Provide numerous and varied opportunities for the learner to become actively involved with content and processes through interactions in classrooms and related learning situations.

* Provide competent, creative teachers capable of synthesizing knowledge, learning processing, and learning resources.

* Provide continuous evaluation of each learner by both the school system and by the learner to assess his or her attainment of growth.

* Encourage all school system personnel to continuously evaluate the degree of effectiveness and efficiency of the total school program.

 

HISTORY of G.W. CARVER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Mr. L.V. Blount: Principal, 1962-1995
G.W. Carver Elementary School was built in 1961 and designed as a K-6 unit. The school opened in September 1962, with Mr. Lee Vester Blount, Jr. as principal, a staff of 27 teachers, and approximately 750 students. At one point, Carver Elementary School included the 7th grade, which increased the population to approximately 850 students.

Carver Elementary School began operation with a modified Joplin plan in reading. In this system, all students were taught reading according to performance levels and not the conventional within class styles. The school now has a self-contained pattern.

At the beginning, the school developed one of the most outstanding enrichment programs in the State. The enrichment program was made possible through generous donations of equipment by local citizens and volunteers, dedicated services by staff members, and community patrons. The enrichment program consisted of typing, modern dance, piano, Spanish, public speaking, and art. Students became proficient in all of these areas. Carvers’ integration crossover began in 1969. Carver was designated as a 2nd and 3rd grade school.

In 1979 Carver Elementary School was among the first of 17 schools in the State of Louisiana to achieve model for reading. Carver’s principal and some staff members were among the group that pioneered the criteria of excellence for the improvement of reading, under the direction of Mrs. Lucille McDowall, State Right-to-Read Director. The school not only shared its findings with other schools in the parish, but also with other schools throughout the State of Louisiana. The principal and staff members conducted inservices and several workshops throughout the State.



Mr. Ellis R. Spikes: Principal, 1995-2010
In 1995, Ellis R. Spikes became Carver Elementary's second principal and moved the school into the new millennium. Many new educational programs were implemented under his leadership.

Mrs. Pamela March: Principal, 2010-Present
In 2010, Pamela March became the third principal of Carver Elementary. Years earlier she was a student at Carver and later a teacher.

Carver Elementary School currently has an enrollment of approximately 430 students. The teaching staff consists of 19 homeroom teachers, 5 special education teachers, one librarian, one guidance counselor, 2 nurses, 2 physical education teachers, one music teacher, 2 computer lab directors, and a number of valuable support personnel.
